Teddy bears have been collected for fun and financial investment for years. Collectors invest with a variety of strategies in mind.

Teddy Bears are collected for their financial value and for unique creative interest. While most high end collectors are concerned with finding valuable bears and maintaining their value, many others collect solely for the love of bears. Not all the bears purchased will ever escalate significantly in value. Budgets are always a factor for those who collect. There is an entry-level market for all who wish to start collecting. However, the market quickly prices out many collectors. Avid collectors match the market for collectible bears, both antique and modern.

Understand the Value of Teddy Bears Prior to Purchasing

Whether buying in the antique or modern bear market, it is important to understand the value of bears. Consumers can utilize online guides and research tools to find market rates for antique bears and to trace the history of companies when considering modern bears. While current bear values do not promise future bears will produce value it can give some insight into how companies are marketing and maintaining value for collectors. For instance, companies that reintroduce discontinued lines that have become highly valuable can damage the value of collectibles. If value of a bear product is a motivation for purchase, this is important information to consider.

Consumers also need to understand the value of limited production. New toys often go through a craze where toy values increase dramatically. While consumers may not be able to buy the product immediately, there is no limited production line for these products. Some collectors see these values as indicators of future value. When a new toy becomes the latest popular craze, these toy values often are reduced to yard sale prices. There are just too many pieces in circulation for a limited number of actual collectors. Bears are no different.

Research Collectible Teddy Bear Lines

Bear collectors need to know the history of toy bears. The history is fascinating, but for bear collectors there is even a more important issue. Those who do not know the history of bears can find themselves at the mercy of others knowledge and expertise. While there are many wonderful bear deals to be found, there is an unfortunate market for forgeries. Educated consumers have a better chance at combating this problem.

There are a number of popular bear lines with collectors. Steiff is the oldest of the German lines. Collectors look to the antique and the modern version of Steiff for additions to their bear holdings. They are popular among collectors for maintaining and increasing value. Merrythought, a British company is another name bear sought out by collectors. However, merely buying a bear from one of the popular manufacturers is no guarantee that one will have a high value bear. Collectors need to research the number of bears created, the originality of the creation, and the potential for future growth.

Investing in Teddy Bear Artists

Collectors who invest for profit and those who collect for interest both investigate bear artists. Bear artists generally are new bear creators who are producing new products with original patterns and designs. Some of these artists will remain independent proprietors producing small lines. Others will develop their own companies that have value. Some will sell their productions to larger bear companies.

Collectors invest in bear artists without knowing the future of the investment. Some investors purchase based solely on the artistry of the bear and the beauty it adds to their collection. However, other collectors truly do believe they have found the next great bear line and are making an investment in the future. An early bear by a later star bear maker can be a sound financial investment for a collector.

Bear collecting can be a fun hobby and one that can have financial benefits. Consumers who research their options and educate themselves about the bear market have the best opportunities for success.
